Scales at Work!

I work in various places for my job, and today as I walked into the women’s bathroom, guess what I saw?! A SCALE! What does that say about women of our generation? They are so preoccupied with their weight that they actually have started bringing scales to work. As if it wasn’t bad enough to worry about your weight at home, now you can have the benefit of worrying about your weight at work! I wonder how many times a day women step on that scale? And I wonder who brought the scale to work and what they were thinking? Were they thinking women would actually like having a scale in the women’s bathroom? Note that this place was NOT a gym or fitness center. So why would a woman need to see her weight at work anyway?

It just makes me angry that weight is so important to women. So important that somebody felt they would bring a scale to work and put it in the women’s bathroom so everyone can use it. I can see why women would stock the bathroom with tampons, pads, or even hand lotion, but a scale?! It’s just so ridiculous.

Common Feelings

I was rereading some of the pages here on Eating Disorder Nation, and I wanted to direct your attention to this particular one: COMMON FEELINGS. There I wrote common feelings one with an eating disorder may feel (or any addiction for that matter). The reason why I want to direct your attention to it is so you can be aware that what you are feeling is what countless of others have felt while battling an eating disorder. You are not alone, and although most of your thoughts may be tainted by your eating disorder (you really are seeing the world through a fog), these feelings ARE YOUR FEELINGS, and SHOULD NOT be denied!

Hello Everyone!

Hello everyone! I just wanted to write an update. I started this blog with the intention of it being more of an informative Web site rather than a blog. Therefore, I won’t be updating the blog section regularly (as you can see). However, I do check the comments and read them whenever I get one. Just because I’m not posting blogs does not mean the Web site is inactive! The links and information are there for your benefit, and I hope you can find answers to any questions you may have. And if  you don’t, feel free to contact me. I’m very much alive in the Internet world so your questions will not go unanswered!

Thank you for all the support.

Skinniest Cities?

Ok, so I was sitting watching the news with my husband and we saw a blurb about California getting rid of all trans-fat products in restaurants, bakeries, and other food establishments by 2010. At first I thought, “Why do the restaurants have to change when the people always eating these foods need to change for themselves?” Of course I still believe this; those who are overweight due to compulsive overeating or emotional eating won’t be fixed even if all restaurants decided to serve nothing but salads for the rest of time. But of course this will help – even if it is just a little.

Anyway – if you want to read the article, click here. (All links open in new window.)

But that’s not what this blog is about. After the blurb was finished, KRON 4 (my news station here in the Easty Bay Area) decided to list the three SKINNIEST cities in the Bay Area. Yes, they actually used the term “skinniest.” Of course this was meant as a good thing – the “obsese epidemic” isn’t much of an issue here (I guess), but did they have to use the term “skinniest?” I’m sure a normal person wouldn’t think twice about this comment, but I guess someone who has suffered from an eating disorder (me) would take offense.

Why couldn’t they use the term “healthiest?” Or “average weight?”

Ok. Letting it go. :-)

Book?

I’m pretty sure everyone who has ever had an addiction has said at least once, “I should write a book about my life.” Well, I’ve been saying that for about six years now. And yesterday I finally started. I don’t know if my life story is worth publishing, but even if it never sees the light of day at least I can finally get all that baggage out and onto paper so I can look back on my life and see how far I’ve come.

I came into contact with a supportive and compassionate loved one of a fellow sufferer. The sufferer is coming out of inpatient in a few days and I’m going to be in contact with her. I’m so excited, and I hope I can help her in some way. This must be such a scary transition she is going through (after all, I went through the exact same thing almost two years ago), and I hope this is just the beginning of an awesome relationship and an awesome journey for her.

Sorry for the lack of updates! But I hope you are enjoying the site. :-)

The Suffering

We went to the movies today and I coudn’t help but think how many people may be suffering from an eating disorder. I saw an incredibley thin woman and wondered if she was naturally that way or if she had anorexia. I’m constantly writing how people don’t have to look like they have an eating disorder to have one. And nevermind how many have actual eating disorders, just imagine how many woman out there aren’t happy with their body size. I believe 1 out of every 4 women have an issue with food and or their body. I wonder how many people suffer from an eating disorder and don’t even know it. It makes me feel sad that those suffering in silence may not have the tools to reach out and get help. Or maybe they don’t want help. Or they don’t know they need help.

Jenny Craig Ads

I really like Jenny Craig’s new commercials. Instead of saying what size the women have made it to, they say things like, “I’m a size energetic,” or “I’m a size stronger.” They focus more on what losing weight does for your health rather than your image. And they also emphasize getting down to your ideal weight for your height rather than the ideal weight society wants you to be. Finally a diet ad I approve of, lol.

SORRY!

If you have been coming to the site regularly, you’ll probably notice that I’ve been changing the layout constantly. I’m a perfectionist and never seem to like what anything looks like. So bear with me until I find a layout that suites the site. Thanks!

Diet Ads

Last night I was watching television and came across a diet pill ad. I’m not sure what it was called, there are so many diet pills out there it’s hard to tell between them all, but I wanted to talk about this specific one because I just thought the way they tackled it was so bizarre and semi-disturbing.

When they started listing the reasons why you should use their product, the first thing they said was, “Body fat is unattractive.” No, let’s not talk about how excess body fat is unhealthy. People don’t care about their health as much as they care about their appearance. Just that one line alone – “Body fat is unattractive.” – probably makes people who are self-conscious about their bodies feel bad and shameful.

The second thing that I found horrible was the fact they listed why people have excess body weight in the first place. The three that were obvious were poor diet, lack of exercise, and stress. Ok so that’s not that horrible, but here’s what that says to me:

“Hey America! We know you hate eating well and exercising. We know your lives are just so full of stress. Well we have the solution for you! Try our new diet pills and you won’t have to change or modify your lives at all! Why lose weight in a healthy way when you can just pop a pill?”

Gah! I hate diet ads!

Those pills aren’t going to make you happy! They may or may not take away your body fat, but what happens when you run out of pills? And what happens to your self-confidence and unhappiness? Are those pills going to make you happier? Maybe they will when you are 30 pounds lighter, but do you really think you can keep the weight off without modifying at least something in your life? No. To maintain a healthy weight and mind, you need to make changes in your life. Too much stress? Take time out for yourself. Erase something from your plate. Eating too much junk food? Eat better. Not in the mood for exercise? Start off small…like taking walks. Can’t do these things? Maybe an OA meeting is the place for you to get started.

Pills aren’t the answer. Diet ads are absolutely disgusting and don’t care whether or not you are fat or thin. All they care about is how much money they’ll milk out of those who are vulnerable and have low self-esteem. They are taking advantage of you. Why give your money to people who don’t even care?
